Lonna Vines, Ukulele Storytime Guru: Library Rocks!

Lonna Vines, Children’s Librarian at Charlotte Mecklenburg Library (Hickory Grove) and ukulele storytime guru, was one of the lucky few who helped to pick the Collaborative Summer Library Program theme of Libraries Rock! The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library system does not officially participate in the Collaborative Summer Library Program. However, branches are welcome to celebrate the theme at their individual locations.

Lonna: I was on the CSLP manual committee for three years before moving to Charlotte, NC. This committee is in charge of selecting the theme, coming up with ideas for the programming manual, and editing the manual before it is released to libraries across the nation. As a musician and someone who fought diligently for this summer’s amazing theme, I have created a music themed book display in my children’s department at the Hickory Grove branch and I have also planned several music programs this summer for all age groups. Some of the upcoming music based events at Hickory Grove branch include:

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is a huge supporter of the arts and has a fabulous partnership titled ASC Culture Blocks which is sponsored by the Arts & Science Council and funded by Mecklenburg County. This partnership provides cultural programming in seven geographical blocks of Mecklenburg County and is offered across all 20 branches in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library system. Via this amazing partnership, the Hickory Grove branch has had the pleasure of hosting many arts and culture based programs for our community, and we are incredibly grateful.

As a child, I loved both my public and school library. I believe I was the last generation that still used card catalogs in early elementary school. I still remember the thrill of the first time I used the card catalog all by myself (with no help from the librarian) to find one of the Baby-Sitters Club series books. I am also proud to report that the Baby-Sitters Club series is still going strong with today’s generation with their recent releases in Graphic Novel format.

Libraries are constantly changing. That is one of the most amazing things about libraries. The guiding principles of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is to be an essential community connector, a welcoming place to all, and a destination for learning. In order to achieve this, we must evolve and change as an organization to meet the needs of our community. I think the biggest change that has occurred in libraries since I was a child is their active roles outside of the branch through outreach initiatives and social activism. I am incredibly proud to work for a library system that collects and preserves posters from local protests, where library staff will participate as a group representing the system in the August CLT Pride Parade, and where they have also dedicated themselves to fostering more community conversations around the difficult but very important conversations happening in our local community and nation.
