Music Staff Bean Bag Toss

September 2, 2016

We kicked off our homeschooling program by focusing on some basic notation and rhythms.  Using Popsicle Stick Harmonicas and rhythm flashcards, everyone hummed along to the beat.  We ran out of breath on the longer notes, which cracked us up and one of the kids suggested we quack like ducks instead, which made us laugh some more.

After going over the rhythm portion, we talked about pitch and learned the note names on the Treble Clef Scale.  To put our lesson into action, the students threw bean bags at the music staff that was taped to the floor and then had to call out the name of the note they landed on.  After some rounds of that, they picked a word made up of the musical alphabet to spell and tried to land on the notes from their words.
