TEDx: Music Saved My Life After Sexual Assault

I was sexually assaulted when I was 14 and after that, went dark. I lost the will to live even though my life was just getting started. Music gave me my power back.

It was 1999 and I was tethered to my discman 24/7. I'd wander around wearing a NIN shirt and a pair of JNCOs, holding my portable CD player precariously like a tray of full of drinks. You could here the whir of our gigantic home PC burning new cds constantly thanks to the creation of the internet.

Dialup was a magical portal to a distant land of new music and interesting people. It delivered sounds to my ears that helped me not feel alone anymore. I also found a chatroom of goth kids who loved Nine Inch Nails as much as I did and had hard lives too.

That year for Christmas, I received my first bass guitar and I spent lots of time listening and picking out the notes. This was before YouTube, so I relied heavily on my ear and guitar tabs. My family couldn't afford lessons, I taught myself.

The music in my life was a great distraction from my trauma. It gave me a will to live through those years and an unbreakable bond was formed between us. It took someone believing in me to really kickstart my journey into musicianship and once my volume was up, I was ready to teach other women and girls to turn up the volume, too.

My TEDx Talk is the story of how I found my voice and use it to help women, girls, and gender non-conforming folks understand that their voices matter. Music will transform weakness into strength, pain into power, sadness into hope. Watch my TEDx Talk below.
